As a vast portion of the Midwest and South kept a careful eye out for new storms that could generate additional twisters and hail, a powerful tornado tore through southeastern Missouri before dawn on Wednesday, killing at least five people and wreaking extensive wreckage.
According to Sgt. Clark Parrott of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the tornado made landfall at roughly 3:30 in the morning and travelled across a rural area of Bollinger County, which is located about 50 miles (80 kilometres) south of St. Louis.
Homes were reduced to splinter piles and trees were uprooted. One structure was turned on its side. Drone footage shows rescue workers using torches to gaze inside the wreckage.
The search for survivors and victims involved more than 20 agencies, and Parrott stated that because of the extensive damage, they occasionally had to use chainsaws to clear bush and trees in order to get to residences.
"The damage is rather extensive. Just seeing it breaks my heart "Parrott remarked.According to Bollinger County Sheriff Casey A. Graham's Facebook post, the twister significantly damaged the small rural settlements of Glen Allen and Grassy as well as the surrounding area.
The two settlements are separated by a hunting area.Graham reported that at least five people had died, but he withheld their names so that their families could be contacted first.
Please comprehend the magnitude of this operation, he pleaded. "I am aware that everyone wants to know what happened and any developments. As your sheriff, I am concerned about making sure everyone is counted and that those who still need assistance get it."
Charles Collier, 61, who owns a storage facility in Glen Allen, claimed to have seen the coroner's van drive past with its lights on.Knowing there were bodies there made for a "sad, sad picture," according to Collier, who wasn't wholly glad when he learned his institution had been spared.
Thinking about all these other folks and what they are going through left me feeling numb.
Josh Wells claimed that the storm drove in his bedroom wall and tore the roof off of half of his Glen Allen home.
Fortunately, he had already escaped with his son to his sister's house, which had a basement. My brother-in-law made it down just before we heard the roar of the wind and the sound of debris crashing around us, he recalled. "We all ran down and huddled against the wall.
While his sister's house was still standing, the surrounding was gassy due to a damaged propane unit.
Authorities reported that a second tornado made landfall in the Colona neighbourhood in western Illinois on Tuesday morning.
Some of the establishments there had wind damage, according to local news sources.Baseball-sized hail and winds up to 90 mph (145 kph) also caused damage in the Quad Cities region of Illinois and Iowa.
Moreover, semitrailers that had been blown over by winds were reported in Lee County, which is located about 95 miles (153 km) west of Chicago.
