Ryuichi Sakamoto's demise was announced earlier today on his official Twitter profile (2 April). The post mentioned that he passed away on March 28 last week. We are profoundly grieved to hear the demise of artist and musician Ryuichi Sakamoto, stated the management group Commons for the pioneering Japanese composer.
Sakamoto received a second cancer diagnosis in 2021. The Commmons statement continued, "Despite enduring treatment for cancer found in June 2020, Sakamoto continued to create works in his home studio whenever his health would permit. He remained a musician right up until the death.
We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all of his supporters, his admirers, and the medical staff in both Japan and the United States who did everything they could to help him get better. The funeral service was held among Sakamoto's immediate family members, as was his adamant request.
"Finally, we would like to share one of Sakamoto's favourite quotes: "Ars longa, vie brevis."/Art is long, life is fleeting," Commons stated in the statement's conclusion.
Sakamoto was wellknown for his solo work as well as for cofounding the Yellow Magic Orchestra with the late Yukihiro Takahashi, who passed away earlier this year, and Haruomi Hosono. Born in 1952, Sakamoto began playing the piano at a young age and became a pioneer of electronic and ambient music during the course of his artistic career.
He also wrote the music for movies like The Last Emperor, The Revenant, and Merry Christmas, Mr. Laurence (1983), which he co-starred in with David Bowie.
Sakamoto received his initial diagnosis of throat cancer in 2014. He resumed composing music after receiving therapy and kept working on it. Sakamoto declared in a statement that "from now on, I shall be living with cancer" following his second diagnosis in 2021.
I do, however, hope to continue doing music for a while. He released his 12th album earlier this year; it was recorded between 2021 and 2022.
The musician's 70th birthday was celebrated in November with the release of A Tribute to Ryuichi Sakamoto: To The Moon and Back, which includes remixes of his songs by musicians like Thundercat, Devonté Hynes, Alva Noto, and David Sylvian.
